Duomo - The Treasure of San Gennaro

The Church of San Gennaro is the cathedral of the diocese of Naples. It is one of the largest churches of the city and hosts Baptistery of San Giovanni in Fonte the oldest Western.

The construction was built in the late XII century by order of Charles II of Anjou and at that time incorporated the two ancient churches of Santa Restituta and of Santa Stefania,witnessing the ancient Christian civilization.
In San Gennaro Chappel is held in the so-called “imbusto” reliquary bust, masterpiece of Gothic sculpture, with the shrine where is stored San Gennaro’s blood, which miraculously liquefies twice a year.

 

 

Besides it’s possible to see the pictures by Francesco Solimena, Luca Giordano and one painting of the Assunta piece by Perugino.
Next to the Church, you can find the Treasure of San Gennaro, with old documents, precious objects, silverware, jewels and paintings of inestimable value, which during the centuries, sovereigns, popes, eminent men or common people have given for devotion to the Saint.
